Supporting the LGBTQIA+ Community
The LGBTQIA+ community is a vibrant, essential part of New York City and we are long overdue to provide the support needed to empower and uplift our communities. As an ally and supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community, I will continue to advocate on behalf of our communities and stand up for our Trans brothers and sisters and TGNC individuals as Bronx Borough President. We must fight for representation and equity in politics, the workplace and denounce discrimination, hatred, oppression, racism and violence in all forms.
As a City Council Member, I was proud to support efforts to re-establish the Bronx LGBTQIA+ Center to provide much needed services in our borough. I will continue to work with the Bronx LGBTQIA+ Center, as well as other providers, to expand programming and reach across our borough. We must also work to create supportive housing in the Bronx for LGBTQIA+ youth and foster youth, who far too often find themselves homeless.
I was also a staunch supporter of the effort to repeal the Walking While Trans ban, and will work to ensure that the repeal of this law is successful so that our Trans neighbors do not face arrest merely for the way they look. As Borough President, our office will work with all stakeholders, community partners and advocates to support policies that strengthen the LGBTQIA+ community and invest programs and resources for affordable housing, healthcare, mental health, social services, holistic services and wraparound programs for individuals, young adults, older adults and families.
